Male Belted Kingfisher in flight. He was perched on this dead tree and just took off and was hovering over the water only to come back to the tree. These birds are known to dive into as little as 2 inches of water - they're amazing! They live in burrowed out holes in the moist ground at the sides of marshes, ponds and lakes. This is one bird species where the female has more color than the male - she has a rust colored band at her chest and belly. Copyright©Terri Mills
